FANCY GAP ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Implementation Date - November/December 2012
Our school cares about the safety and well-being of our students. We want to make sure our school is a safe place for students to learn. To do this we are using a program called the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) is one of the best-known bullying prevention programs in the world. With over thirty-five years of research and successful implementation around the world, OBPP is a whole-school program that has been proven to prevent or reduce bullying throughout a school setting.
The program also works to make relationships better among students. The program is for all students, not just those who are being bullied or who are bullying others. Bystanders play a key role in reducing and preventing bullying.
Parents and guardians also have an important role in this program. Your child will be asked to tell an adult at school and at home if he or she is bullied or sees bullying happening at school. It will be very important that you take any reports of bullying seriously and tell our school staff. Our school staff members have been trained to deal with bullying situations when we are told about them.
Bullying should not be seen as “kids being kids” or something that students just need to deal with. Bullying is peer abuse. Bullying occurs when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself.
Having a safe school experience is something that all students at Fancy Gap Elementary School should be able to enjoy. More information about our program will be sent home next month. Together we can reduce bullying incidents at FGES and help all of our students succeed!
